About This Item

"438" The Greatest O.D.I Ever

438

The Wanderers Stadium, jam-packed with 32 000 fans, on Sunday (12 March 2006) witnessed what has been dubbed the greatest one-day international ever as South Africa edged Australia by one wicket, with one ball to spare, in the highest scoring and most explosive ODI in history.

Australia batted first and scored the highest ever score in a one day international ending up on 434/4. South Africa amazingly in return scored a massive 438/9 with one ball to spare. No fewer than 12 records set on the day.

A DAY OF RECORDS
Not for nothing have they called it the greatest one-day international ever. Cricket's record books were substantially revised after the goings-on at the Wanderers on 12 March 2006. The new records set were the following:

Highest team total in a one-day international: South Africa, 438 (previous best: Sri Lanka's 398 against Kenya at the 1996 World Cup). This was also, it goes without saying, the highest successful run-chase in ODIs - by quite some way.

Second-highest team total in a one-day international: Australia, 434.

Highest aggregate total in a one-day international: 872 (previous best: 693 by India and Pakistan).

Most sixes struck in a one-day international: 26 (previous best: 21).

Most fours struck in a one-day international: 87 (previous best: 79).

Second-highest ODI score by a South African batsman: Herschelle Gibbs, 175 (off 111 balls) (second to Gary Kirsten's 188 not out against UAE at the 1996 World Cup).

Highest individual ODI innings against Australia: Herschelle Gibbs, 175 (surpassing Robin Smith of England's 167 not out in 1993).

Best second-wicket ODI partnership against Australia: Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs, 187.

Most runs conceded by a bowler in a one-day international: Mick Lewis, 113.

Gibbs scored his fastest century: off 79 balls (and surpassed 6 000 runs in ODIs).

Smith scored his fastest 50 in an ODI: off 33 balls.

Ricky Ponting's 164 (off 105 balls) was his highest ODI score. In the course of his innings, he hit the most sixes hit by an Australian in an innings (nine, beating the record of eight previously held by himself and Andrew Symonds), and surpassed 9 000 runs in ODIs.

Nathan Bracken took his first international five-wicket haul.
