About This Item

Front and back of Coin

The 202d Military Intelligence Battalion was activated at Fort Monmouth, N.J., on October 2, 1982, as a subordinate element of the 513th MI Brigade. The units comprising the 202d have a long distinguished history of service to the nation, including participation in the Pacific Theater of World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and OPERATION DESERT SHIELD/STORM and OPERATION RESTORE HOPE.
Since its activation in 1982, the 202d MI Battalion has developed into an echelon-above-corps battalion capable of rapid deployment into a bare base, hostile environment to provide theater level sustained counterintelligence and interrogation support for U.S. ARCENT and U.S. CENTCOM Forces. Our focus is on Southwest Asia, a challenging and complex area of the world.
The battalion's participation in the Bright Star series of exercises in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1992 and 1993, and in the Gallant Eagle exercises in 1986 and 1988 added realism to training by defining missions and requirements for operations. Additionally, the battalion deploys soldiers to countries throughout Southwest Asia for intelligence operations and training.
The 202d MI Battalion's participation in OPERATION DESERT SHIELD/STORM in 1990-1991 reinforced the meaning of its motto, "Collect and Exploit." The operations provided timely, quality interrogation and multi-disciplined counterintelligence support to the warfighter. Successful participation in OPERATION RESTORE HOPE in Somalia placed the battalion in the forefront of human intelligence collection in operations other than war. The battalion again deployed soldiers in 2001, immediately after 9/11 supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and currently supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM with soldiers deployed to the Area of Responsibility.
The battalion's honors include: The Defense of Saudi Arabia Battle Streamer, the Liberation of Kuwait Battle Streamer, the Meritorious Unit Citation for operations during OPERATION DESERT STORM/SHIELD, the National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation for 1991, 1992, and 1993, and the Army Superior Unit Award. The battalion today is the culmination of many outstanding leaders, years of experience, and the dedication and efforts of thousands of soldiers.
On June 1, 1994, the 202d MI Battalion's colors were uncased at Fort Gordon, GA., the new home of "THE DEUCE"
