About This Item

Impala

This is a real coin. If you find anything else please let us know. See the gallery for a photo.

We live close to the Kruger National Park, which we visit frequently, and love dearly. We have dedicated this series of personal geocoins to some of the special animals found in the Park.

IMPALA  (Aepyceros Melampus)

Appearance
This is the most common antelope of the bushveld regions of South Africa. A very graceful, rufous-fawn antelope, with white underparts, measuring approximately 900mm at the shoulders. Rams weigh around 60 Kg and ewes 40 Kg. A black stripe extends from the top of the rump down the back of each thigh. The lower hind legs have glands beneath tufts of black hair. Only the rams have horns which are lyre-shaped, and reach a length of 700mm.

Diet
The Impala is a mixed feeder. It browses on shrubbery and grazes grass on gently undulating or flat terrain. Acacia pods and fruits are taken when available.

Breeding
Following a gestation period of 194-200 days single calves are born during early summer. An ewe is sexually mature at two years of age. Young rams can breed as yearlings, but are prevented to do so by territorial rams, which dominate reproductive opportunities.

Behaviour
Herds seldom wander more than eight km from permanent water supply. Renowned for their spectacular leaps over shrubs and bushes, when alarmed. Rutting occurs during early winter months. Young rams live in bachelor herds, and those strong enough to be successful in establishing territories, become solitary within their respective domains during the rut. Females live in breeding herds.

Habitat
Its preferred habitat is woodland savannahs of the northern and eastern districts of South Africa, and in countries beyond.

Predators
The Impala is preyed upon by most of the large carnivores and the young often fall prey to Pythons. The Impala are therefore on constant alert. Should one of them spot danger, it will snort an alarm and the whole herd will scatter. It is one of the treats offered by nature to see this antelope perform their incredible 3 metre high and 12 metre long leaps.

Picked this up somewhere (Festivus 2019 event - oops?), then "lost the plot" for a while. Time to give up on trying to catch up, and get these guys moving again. Sorry for hanging on to these for way too long.

G’Day My Fellow Geocaching Friends from around the World,

Today is the 10th April 2020 and I am currently on Lockdown due to the Corona Virus that is sweeping the world. I am using this time to go through the 1000,s of TB photos that are clogging up my phone.

PLEASE NOTE: IF I HAVE ALREADY DISCOVERED OUR TB OR IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR TB TO BE DISCOVERED I AM MORE THAN HAPPY FOR YOU TO JUST DELETE THE LOG. I HAVE SEEN YOUR TB EITHER ON FACEBOOK OR IN PERSON AT AN EVENT IN NSW, ACT OR VIC (AUSTRALIA) SOMETIME FROM 1ST DECEMBER 2019 TO 10TH APRIL 2020. ONCE AGAIN PLEASE DELETE IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY LOG.

So Here is a little about me. My name is Daniel Newton aka DARKSIDEDAN and I am from Canberra, Australia. I currently have just over 7000 Finds and 500 Hides. I have three personal Pathtags and a collection of over 8000 Pathtags and 500 Extagz.

I have included one of the Geocaching poems that I have written. I hope that anyone reading it likes it. Thanks for all the caches and sorry for the generic log for this cache but with 157 caches in one day it would be too hard to write a different one for each cache.

Geocache Poem
By DARKSIDEDAN

My endless search goes on and on
Looking for treasures of every kind
Always chasing just one more find
Putting past DNF’s out of my mind

I step out into the world outside,
Seeking what is hidden from me
What size, shape or form will it be?
Only time will tell, I can’t wait to see

Will I find my prize at the end?
I will search in the failing light and cold
Filling with despair having looked everywhere
Where is this thing that gives my life pleasure?

Looking all around from every angle
I read the logs and check the hint
I curse out loud as I walk in circles
Screaming the bloody thing it not there

As time flies by and I fail to see,
Never once stopping to realize
It always been there before my eyes
No need for sorrow, there’s the Geocache.

Thanks for taking the time to put your TB out into the world.

Best Wishes
Daniel
