Las Vegas ist die größte Stadt im US-Bundesstaat Nevada. Sie ist vor allem wegen der vielen Casinos bekannt, die sich hauptsächlich entlang des Las Vegas Strip angesiedelt haben.
Mit dem Bau des Hoover Dam von 1931 bis 1935 und der Legalisierung des Glücksspiels in Nevada 1931 wurde der Grundstein für das schnelle Wachstum der Stadt gelegt. 1941 öffnete mit dem El Rancho Vegas das erste Hotelcasino etwas außerhalb der damaligen Ortschaft Las Vegas und im Dezember 1942 folgte das New Frontier am Strip. Der Mobster Bugsy Siegel, der seit 1941 ein Wettbüro für Pferderennen in Las Vegas betrieb, kaufte Ende 1945 mit mehreren Partnern, unter ihnen Meyer Lansky, Moe Sedway und David Berman, das Glücksspielhotel El Cortez. Bald darauf wurde es mit Gewinn verkauft und das Geld in den Bau des Flamingo Las Vegas investiert. Es wurde das erste Hotelcasino, das in Anlehnung an die Nachtclubs in Hollywood einen Bühnensaal hatte, in dem Stars auftraten. Entgegen der gängigen Legende war Siegel somit nicht der Gründervater des Konzepts der Hotelcasinos und des modernen Las Vegas, sondern folgte anderen, die vor ihm diesen Weg eingeschlagen hatten.
In den 1970er und 80er Jahren galt die Stadt trotzdem als zunehmend heruntergekommen.
Eine Trendwende leitete Steve Wynn 1989 mit der Eröffnung des Mirage ein, das unter anderem mit der Siegfried & Roy Show wieder neue und vor allem zahlungskräftige Kundschaft anlocken konnte. Der erste Ansatz waren Kongresse und Tagungen, die ein neues Publikum anzogen. Seit der Jahrtausendwende wurde von offizieller Seite versucht, das Image der Stadt von einer Sin City („Stadt der Sünde“) mit Casinos, Nacktbars und illegaler Prostitution zu einer City of Entertainment („Stadt der Unterhaltung“) zu ändern; das Ziel war, die Stadt auch für Familien mit Kindern attraktiv zu machen. Diese Entwicklung war ambivalent: Während einerseits viele Shows und Hotels familienfreundlich gestaltet wurden, ist die Rotlichtbranche noch immer allgegenwärtig, vor allem durch massenhaft verteilte Werbeflugblätter von Strippern und Prostituierten auf den Straßen. Nach 1990 war Las Vegas zeitweise eine der am schnellsten wachsenden Städte in den USA.

Las Vegas is the largest city in the US state of Nevada. It is best known for the many casinos that are mainly located along the Las Vegas Strip.
The construction of the Hoover Dam from 1931 to 1935 and the legalization of gambling in Nevada in 1931 laid the foundation for the city's rapid growth. In 1941, El Rancho Vegas was the first hotel casino to open just outside of what was then Las Vegas, and in December 1942 the New Frontier followed on the Strip. The mobster Bugsy Siegel, who had been running a betting shop for horse races in Las Vegas since 1941, bought the El Cortez gambling hotel at the end of 1945 with several partners, including Meyer Lansky, Moe Sedway and David Berman. Soon after, it was sold for a profit and the money invested in building the Flamingo Las Vegas. It became the first hotel casino to have a stage hall in the style of the nightclubs in Hollywood, in which stars performed. Contrary to popular legend, Siegel was not the founding father of the concept of hotel casinos and modern Las Vegas, but followed others who had taken this path before him.
In the 1970s and 80s, however, the city was seen as increasingly run down.
Steve Wynn initiated a trend reversal in 1989 with the opening of the Mirage, which was able to attract new and above all wealthy customers with the Siegfried & Roy Show.
