Sparky wants to travel about the world participating in Morse Code contacts (QSOs) and spreading the fun of the oldest form of electronic communication (Morse Code) among those familiar with Internet, WWW, and satelite microwave devices, 'Cachers.
Sparky is a Speed-X telegraph key with a travel bug tag attached. Sparky is being released in the wild with four QSOs (contacts) to his record. On March 30, 2002, Sparky made his first appearance at the ARRL Convention & hamfest in Lewiston, ME. Later that day, Sparky talked to: Roman, EC2AER in Spain; Frank, 9A2HF in Croatia; Pete, OE9SLH in Austria; and Joe, AL1F in Alaska. It is hoped that Sparky will be captured by Ham Radio Operators / Geocachers who will use him to communicate with other operators via Morse Code. After a QSO is logged, Sparky wants to move on to another cache and operator. If a non-ham 'cacher is interested in learning Morse Code, Sparky is there to help. Just pass him on after a while. After a world tour, Sparky would like to come home to K1CGZ in Maine following a year of spreading the fun of CW operating.

I saw that Sparky was placed in a Cache and thought I would give Sparky a work out.
Thing is though that Sparky is missing a component so it's time to be creative. Sparky will be on display at WB6NOA - Gordon West’s Radio School for 2 days as a demo then Sparky will be used as the keyer for a Transmitter Hunt. Then who knows what will be next.

Hi gang, I'm sorry that it's taking me so long to move Sparky. He went on a 1,500 mile driving vacation with my wife and me but we didn't get to do much caching. I've been looking to send him off local, but now a day's it's hard to find a cache that's larger than a Altoids tin. Anyway, thought I'd get out a update...Sparky's alive and well and itching to move on.

I picked-up Sparky while he was watching future Nike endorsers at the local baseball field. I'll send sparky back on his journey while on a driving vacation to Tahoe, has he been to Mono Lake?

10:00A.M.- At first, I (Brian/KA6WSR) had intended to hook Sparky up to my brand-spanking new Yaesu FT-840 (I got it for Christmas) & do a couple of QSO's in his honor. Unfortunately, I (as an unabashed 'Child of the Modern Age') grew up using an iambic paddle & didn't realise just how much of a 'rotten fist' I'd developed when it came to using a straight key (like Sparky). So... what I ended up doing was conducting a brief, pre-arranged contact with my friend (Mike/N6ROD, across town) since he wouldn't have a problem trying to decipher my sloppy five-words-per-minute. At least I felt like this served to discharge my obligation to Sparky! I wanted to try to get him to a cache close to the HRO in Anahiem so he might possibly be closer to some ham-minded cachers... but we figured that this'd be close enough!
