About This Item

Baby Schnuffles is the TB offspring of Schnuffles Tramper, mascot of CT Trampers. It just so happens that they are due to have a baby of their own, too. Baby Schnuffles likes to geocache, just like the rest of the Trampers. With a new baby coming, CT Trampers might not go caching as often as they like, but they can live vicariously though Baby Schnuffles. Just like CT Trampers, Baby Schnuffles especially likes to be First To Find a cache!
In between kid friendly caches, Baby Schnuffles would love to visit with other bears, and other babies. Be sure to post lots of pictures for everyone to see.

The Story of Schnuffles (as told by Al, of CT Trampers)

When Carol and I were dating, I was out shopping with her, and getting ideas for what she might like for Christmas. (our first together) Just basically taking note of the things she was interested in while there. One of the stores we stopped into that day was Linen's and Things. There was this big bin of small stuffed animals, and Carol really liked this little dog that was in there. I made a mental note to come back and get the dog for her.

I went back to the store, and went to the bin of animals. As I was reaching for the dog, I noticed a little bear face in the pile. I dug him out, and he was so cute that I had to get him instead of the dog. He was the only bear that I noticed in the bin.

He had a brand name tag on him, "Gund", but what was strange was that his price tag wasn't one of the regular ones, it was a handwritten one that was stuck to the back of the brand tag. ($2.99 in case you are wondering) I thought that maybe someone had returned him, although I couldn't imagine why. The same afternoon I bought a Christmas tree. After setting it up, I realized that I didn't have a star for the top. I put a green bow on his head, set him at the top of the tree to look like he was climbing, and we had our tree topper.

When Carol came over to see the tree, she fell in love with the bear right away, and was even more thrilled when I told her he was hers!

After that he sort of became our mascot, accompanying us on hikes, road trips, and later Geocaches. If I go solo, more often than not Schnuffles comes with me. (Real manly, huh?) Matter of fact the two of us are hitting the trail this weekend in New Hampshire.

Over the years, I've tried to get some info on him, but I can't find anything anywhere about him. I've looked on the Gund website, even wrote them an email describing him asking for info. that got no response. I've checked Ebay, but I can't find an exact match.

His stuffing isn't what it used to be, so one day we took him to this place in Bethel where you can make your own Teddy Bear to try and see if we could get him stuffed. The owner talked to us, (and to the bear, petted him, said he was cute and that he looked scared, like he didn't want to be re-stuffed. Nice to see someone was at least as nuts as we are) and said that he was perfect as is, and if we got him stuffed we would change his whole personality!

It's weird, sometimes we think there is some magic in him.... Velveteen rabbit, anyone?? :-) His expression almost seems to change now and then.

As far as him being a famous bear, I am unsure. I wish I knew more about him. I guess he's just the famous Geocaching Bear. Sometimes when Carol finds a cache, she'll say that Schnuffles was in her pocket and kicked her in the direction of it.

Both nuts? Maybe, but so are we, and as I've said before insanity loves company.

Please don't call the white coats on us. :-)

We finally got to send Baby on his way, after taking lots of pics as requested. He was a great mountain-traveling companion, and we'll miss him. Whoever finds him next, please take good care of him. ๐Ÿ™‚

We placed him in a cache that's not just kid-friendly, but was even placed by a young cacher (with the help of his parents). We replaced the baggie with a new one; his goal sheet and the WG$ are still in there.

Have fun, Baby Schnuffles!

  • Baby Schnuffles...on the road again. After having an F1 tornado go through Caledonia State Park, we wanted to go out and survey the damage. (Having any tornado in this area is pretty rare...except this year.) We brought Baby Schnuffles along for the ride.
  • Baby at Long Pine Run Reservoir Baby Schnuffles thought Long Pine Run Reservoir looked beautiful after all of the rain from the recent hurricanes, so we took his picture in front of it.
  • Close-up of the damage Baby checked out this tornado-damaged tree at the Caledonia Furnace. Even though it was only an F1, the twister ripped apart this tree without any trouble.
  • More of the tree Here's a different angle of the same tree, where you can see the extent of the damage. Yikes! (Baby is near the top center of the photo.)
  • Bear Valley We thought this was really appropriate...Bear Valley! Ok, so is this really a state forest? See next picture for explanation.
  • Bear Valley State Forest Picnic Area Ok, we confess. Only the picnic area is named Bear Valley; it's in Buchanan State Forest. The picnic area itself is in a fairly secluded part of the forest, between Kittatinny Mountain and Broad Mountain. We later took Baby for a ride to the top of Broad Mountain!
  • Baby on top of Broad Mountain After seeing quite a few wild turkeys on the road, Baby decided to check out the view near where they'd been standing. This is close to the Clark's Knob tower site (elevation: 2,320 ft.), which hosts several towers - microwave, cellular, repeaters, etc. I would've taken a pic of him with one of the towers, but I was paranoid. Baby Schnuffles, mistaken for a terrorist? ;) Far off in the background of this photo is Letterkenny Army Depot.
  • Pooh tells Baby to "think big!" Baby visits with my rather large Pooh Bear. After several outdoor adventures, he was glad to have some time to rest with some other bears before heading off to the next cache.
  • Seeing double...er, triple...er... Baby poses with my collection of Fisher Price Freddy Bears (orange) and Baby Bears (brown). The very worn one in front is my original Freddy, which I got when I was 2 years old (I'm now pushing 30). I remembered how much I loved my Freddy when I was younger and decided to collect some others for nostalgia's sake.
  • No bears were harmed in the posing of this photo. Baby posing with most of the bears in my collection. He loved getting to hang out with so many other bears before going on his way. (Baby's in the center, just above and to the right of the small Pooh Bear in the front row.)
Retrieve It from a Cache 9/9/2004 Daclaren retrieved it from County Park #1 New Jersey   Visit Log

Brought Baby Schnuffles back to PA with us after picking him up in Cape May while we were on vacation. If he's looking to meet bears, he came to the right place...I collect them. (Don't worry - he'll only visit with my collection, not become a part of it!) I'll get some pics of his visit and then move him along to another cache.

Btw, there was a WG$ in the bag with him. Not sure if it was originally there or was put in afterwards, but I'll log it and then put it back in with him so he has some company. ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm going to miss Baby Snnuffles big time, but the master and mistress felt he belonged at the zoo with some other bears for a bit! OK--I guess that's a good thing!

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/2/2004 yodadog and corvus 2 retrieved it from Fandango Connecticut   Visit Log

I have rescued the Baby Schnuffles from another CT cache for the master and mistress to take to the Mopar's old stomping turf this weekend -- if I can part with such a cute bear! (Sure he doesn't want to do the kennel cache with me?)

Last cache of the day and I find this little guy staring up at me. Gonna help him on his way... maybe spread some of his geo-wisdom around Long Island.

Archiving cache, so grabbing Baby Schnuffles back. Will place in a new cache soon.

We figured that this would be a good cache to start off in. Good luck, little guy!

Grab It (Not from a Cache) 3/13/2004 CT Trampers grabbed it   Visit Log

Grabbed Baby Schnuffles from Aunt GeoHo and Uncle Mopar. Schnuffles will give him some pointers on Geocaching and then will send him off into the world in search of babies, bears, and FTFS!

  • GPS pointers Schnuffles gives baby a few pointers on how to use the Gecko
  • Trade advice Schnuffles says: Always try to leave something cool for the next cacher
  • Don't forget! Always cache in and trash out
  • On your way little guy! With a smooch for luck, Schnuffles sends baby on his way.
