Goodbye Loving Butterfly, it’s time to let you go. Another day, another event. Nice to be in a cosy pub as the rain fell. The English really do pubs well. Ale was a native British drink before the arrival of the Roman Empire in the first century, but it was with the construction of the Roman road network that the first pubs, called tabernae (the origin of modern English "tavern"), began to appear. After the departure of the Romans, Alehouses sprang up all over the country. Ale is a potent brew of malted barley, similar to beer but without the hops. With increasing industrial pollution in England, water no longer was safe to drink, so ale became the drink of necessity. Good luck. 🦋

Welcome back to the United Kingdom. I took you on a trip to Runnymede, Surrey, to the west of London. Runnymede's historical significance has been heavily influenced by its proximity to the Roman Road river-crossing at nearby Staines-upon-Thames. The water-meadow at Runnymede is the most likely location where King John sealed Magna Carta Libertatum (Medieval Latin for "Great Charter of Freedoms") in 1215.
The Magna Carta is important because it established the principle that the king and his government were not above the law. It also guaranteed rights to the people, including the right to a fair trial and protection from arbitrary imprisonment. Magna Carta was drafted to make peace between the unpopular king and a group of rebel barons but neither side stuck to their commitments. 👑

Time to go home but first you checkout out some grapes. Sterna Winery is part of the Cyprus Wine Route # 2 to the North of Paphos in the village of Kathikas. Great views from up here in the hills. 🍷

We were alerted to a FTF opportunity at a reservoir north of Paphos so we headed there. Apparently one of Cyprus’ main reservoirs had a leak and had to be drained but they have not had the winter rain to refill it. This reservoir was very low as well. Summer doesn’t look too good. Finished the day by the sea. 🏜️

You stopped in to find a cache at Kourion Stadium, an impressive ruin of the only ancient stadium found in Cyprus. Dating back to the 2nd century, the stadium had a capacity for 6.000 spectators and was the site of pentathlon events in ancient times.
Another stop was at the rock formation Petra tou Romiou, where Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, was born from sea foam according to Greek mythology. The rock is near Paphos, the chief centre of her worship. ♥️

We wanted to go into the mountains today but it snowed overnight. Drove to Larnaca and stopped at salt lakes near the airport. They form the second largest salt lake in Cyprus after the Limassol Salt Lake and are a Ramsar listed site visited by 85 species of water-birds. We enjoyed watching the flamingos. The Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the holiest of shrines within Ottoman Islam, lies on the shore of the lakes. It houses the tomb of Umm Haram, Muhammad's 'wet-nurse' and is home to a large population of friendly stray cats. I wonder how the birds and cats mix.🦩

Καλώς ήρθατε στην Κύπρο! Welcome to Cyprus! My new passport arrived yesterday so I thought I should test it to make sure it works. Anytar had already booked a quick caching trip to Cyprus so I jumped on her trip and we flew to Paphos/Pafos, the 4th largest city in Cyprus. In 1980, Paphos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its ancient architecture, mosaics, and ancient religious importance. A big rain storm came through just after we landed. Did some caching and had a walk around the harbour at night in the rain. Super windy over night. 🇨🇾

Staying close to home in the London suburb of Hammersmith today. Hammersmith is an artsy riverside area, home to eclectic productions at the Lyric theatre and rock shows at the Apollo concert hall. Busy shops and cafes line King Street and fill the Kings Mall, while trendy gastropubs contrast with historic drinking dens like the Dove. Leafy walking trails wind along the River Thames, which is spanned by the landmark Hammersmith Bridge. 🏡

Today was a trip into Brick Lane, a famous street in the East End of London. It’s known for its many curry restaurants and for the street art that adorns the walls of the area. Mr Wombat once worked nearby and I know those days a lot of the art was skilful and a very clever commentary on society. Disappointing to go here today and see that it’s largely just tatty graffiti tags. 🧱
