This geocoin wants to travel to the Grand Canyon's newest feature - the glass Skywalk Bridge at the West Rim -only 2 hours from Vegas - The Glass Skywalk opened in March, 2007 (www.looktours.com/Grand-Canyon-Skywalk) Please take a picture with the coin "floating" 4,000 ft. over the canyon if you get there - Thanks! Afterwards, it would like to visit some interesting geographical places all over the US and the world, with photos of course! (See wish list below for other Four Corners areas it wants to visit) A visit to Stone Mtn., Ga. would be great if it's in the Atlanta area, where its journey started.
This is a benchmark coin of Four Corners, USA -- the only spot in the country where one can stand in four states-- Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico-- balanced on one toe. This coin is a copy of the permanent marker at this point, first placed in 1912.
Interesting places to visit nearby: UTAH - Kanab bills itself as "The Greatest Earth On Show." This area of red rock bluffs has been the site of many films including Planet of The Apes, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Search for Noah's Ark, and episodes of the Six Million Dollar Man.
ARIZONA - Kayenta is the heart of the Navajo reservation, where 400 locals fluent in Navajo - a language without a written alphabet - volunteered for a W.W.II secret tactical "code talkers" unit to evade Nazi and Jap code-crackers. Lake Havasu City is home of the original London Bridge. The bridge couldn't handle the ever-increasing flow of traffic across the Thames, so the British government decided to put the bridge up for sale. Robert McCulloch, founder of the city and chairman of McCulloch Oil, submitted the winning bid of $2.46 Million.
NEW MEXICO - Shiprock Peak is a rock formation rising nearly 1,800 feet above the desert on the Navajo reservation. The peak resembles an enormous 19th-century clipper ship.
The peak is also of great religious significance to the Navajo. Legend has it that Bird Monsters nested on the peak and fed on human flesh. The Warrior Twins were summoned to rid the Navajo of the Bird Monsters.
Shiprock is the remnant of a volcano which solidified about 27 million years ago.
Other local history includes Butch Cassidy who hid from authorities here in the canyons in the 1880's.
