Adventure Juice

An early morning event in Hyde Park was the order of the day today. The drizzle held off until after it had finished. Hyde Park was established by Henry VIII in 1536 when he took the land from Westminster Abbey and used it as a hunting ground. It opened to the public in 1637. 🦌

Tentmantent was passing through London from Lincoln so I took you to see him at an event in a pub. I’ve heard that this pub was the first gastro pub in London. It’s lucky to still be standing after a cacher accidentally set fire to the menu. 🔥

Continued your long weekend to the greater Bristol area and started the day with a breakfast event. Then it was off to battle muddy trails in the Charmy Down area, including an area of liquified mud and cow pooh where the farmer had put an electric fence across the footpath so we had to roll in the soupy muck to get under it. Unpleasant! During World War II, Charmy Down was used by the Royal Air Force and from 1943 by the United States Army Air Forces, primarily as a night fighter interceptor airfield. It was closed in 1946. 🐄

This is the third time I’ve cleaned out the caches at Alexandra Palace in north London. Intended as "The People's Palace" and often referred to as "Ally Pally", Alexandra Palace’s purpose was a public centre of recreation, education and entertainment- North London's counterpart to the Crystal Palace in South London. service. The world's first public broadcasts of (then) "high-definition" television were made from Alexandra Palace in November 1936. 📺

Over to the wonderfully named area of London called Elephant and Castle. It is named after a pub/coaching inn which was first mentioned in the mid 1700s. It was the birthplace of the scientists Michael Faraday (electromagnetism, electrolysis, the practical use of electricity, and the discoverer of benzene) and John Newlands (inventor of the periodic table). It was also where Michael Caine and Charlie Chaplin grew up. 🐘
