The Municipality of Milan began the Twinning activity in 1961 by signing its first Agreement with the city of Sao Paulo.
Fourteen other agreements have since been signed, the most recent with the South Korean city of Daegu.
Twin cities belong to the five continents.

Twinning is a tool that serves to better define friendships and exchanges between cities of different nations linked by significant affinities: a channel that is always open to foster joint activities and develop close political, economic and cultural relations.The twinning have a permanent duration.

With the twinning institute, cooperation between cities, the strengthening of ties between peoples, the maintenance of relations with Italian communities abroad and foreign in Milan, the promotion of local integration and the facilitation of exchange of experiences and strategies aimed at solving problems of a social, economic and environmental nature, with the aim of improving the quality of life and well-being of their respective citizens.
