One night, curled up in his mother’s den, Hyacinth the skunk (his mother had been hoping for a daughter) began thinking about the long hours he had spent on Facebook messaging friends that he actually never met, and trolling for likes with postings about utter nonsense. Suddenly it all seemed so very empty, and he wanted more. He decided to begin on what he had heard was a rite of passage in Australian Aboriginal society – a walkabout. He respected the intentions behind every true walkabout, and realized he could never aspire to those goals (he is, after all, only a skunk). But he thought that telling others he was on a serious journey known as walkabout would give him some respectability, so he shortened his name to ‘Cynth, gave his mum a hug, then hit the road. Should your path and his happen to cross, do not be concerned by what you might have been warned about skunks. Simply great him with a hearty “Hi ya, ‘Cynth!” (even he will smile) and help him on his way.
