I used to go to board game conventions and I remember Magic launching (late 90s would be my guess). Over the next few years various regulars disappeared from the BG convention scene as they defected to Magic conventions. I tried it and enjoyed it but the thought of having to build decks and buying loads of cards in the hope of getting a rare one really meant I couldn't be bothered. I certainly never thought it would still be going strong (assuming it is) two decades later!
