This geocoin originated from the city where Dr. Ezra Green settled: Dover, New Hampshire. Its goal is to travel to Newfoundland and visit any cache there, with the hope of some day returning to Dover.
Dr. Ezra Green was a naval surgeon who served under the command of John Paul Jones during the American Revolutionary War. In 1779, when Ezra Green was sailing on the ship-of-war Ranger near the Banks of Newfoundland, eleven large enemy ships were captured. Seven of them were safely escorted to Boston, their cargoes valued to be 1 million dollars at that time.
EZRA GREEN (1746-1847) |
Ezra Green was born in Malden, Massachusetts on June 17, 1746. After he graduated from Harvard College in 1765, he concluded his study of medicine and surgery and settled in Dover, New Hampshire, where he established a successful practice. After the battle of Bunker Hill, Dr. Green joined the American army in the capacity of surgeon where he served for 18 months. In October, 1777, he accepted an appointment as surgeon of the continental ship-of-war Ranger, under the command of John Paul Jones, then fitting out in Portsmouth, NH. He remained in the service until 1781, when he resigned and engaged in trade. Dr. Green was a Federalist in polities, and a delegate to the New Hampshire constitutional convention of 1820. |
