About This Item

Golden Spike (WEST)

…the Central Pacific Railroad began laying track eastward from Sacramento, California in 1863. The Union Pacific started laying track westward from Omaha, Nebraska, two years later in July, 1865. To meet its manpower needs, the Central Pacific hired thousands of Chinese laborers, including many recruited from farms in Canton. The crew had the formidable task of laying the track crossing California's rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range and had to blast fifteen tunnels to accomplish this. The crew of the Union Pacific, which was composed largely of Irish immigrants and Civil War veterans, had to contend with Indian attacks and the Rocky Mountains. On May 10, 1869, after completing 1,776 miles and 4,814 feet (2,859.66 km) of new track, the two rail lines met with THE JUPITER from Western side and THE 119 from Eastern side at Promontory Summit, Utah, with a ceremonial Golden Spike used to commemorate joining together the two railroads. This spike was originally located at the coordinates named on both Coins (West and East versions) at N 41° 37.077 W 112° 33.095. These two coins are now including in my collection as well!!!

Thank you SO much for sharing this awesome collection of coins with me. I loved seeing all the different coins and you inspired me to start my own collection, of which I now have about a dozen. One coin that stuck out was a mini gun in a holster. I loved it so much I found one and bought it to remind me of you and your wife and how much I really enjoyed meeting both of you. Again. Thanks!!
