About This Item

Devon Island is in Baffin Bay and is located in the Canadian Arctic. It is the largest uninhabited island on Earth, and here are some of the reasons why.

1. The ground remains frozen for almost the entire year.

2. For only a month and a half during the height of summer, the ground is snow-free.

3. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 8°C and the average annual temperature is -16°C.

Consequently Devon Island is a barren expance of rocks, where nothing lives or grows. However, NASA have found Devon Island a very useful place, the islands setting and bleak weather is very similar to conditions on Mars.

Since 2001, Devon Island has been visited annually in the summer months by a research group working on an international research project called the Haughton Mars Project (HMP) they are studying how human explorers might live and work on other planetary objects, in particular on Mars.

Devon Island's bleak landscape, cold climate, and remoteness offer NASA scientists unique research opportunities when simulating conditions which might be experienced on the red planet.
