Albuquerque is the most populated city in the US state of New Mexico and has a long complex history. Two Tiwa pueblos in the area, Sandia and Isleta Pueblos, have been populated for centuries. La Villa de Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colony, and was then controlled by Mexico after 1821. After the Mexican-American War, New Mexico was ratified as a US territory in 1848, and New Albuquerque was incorporated as a town in 1885. In 1912 New Mexico became the 47th US state.
