I was fortunate enough to be awarded this Wild Basin trackable in a random drawing. By coincidence, I served for a time in the 1990's on the Board of Directors of Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. Wild Basin Preserve is an urban wilderness and environmental education and research center, located west of Austin, Texas in Westlake Hills. It was formed beginning in 1974 by seven visionary women who were members of an environmental group called Now or Never, which was established to preserve a natural area for science classes and teacher training. After years of fund raising and lobbying efforts, 227 acres of native Texas Hill Country habitat were preserved.
Today, it is known as Wild Basin Creative Research Center, which is owned and operated by St. Edwards University, and is managed as part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. It serves both the visiting public and facilitates student education and research at Wild Basin. Wild Basin maintains 2.5 miles of hiking trails, and provides habitat for the endangered Golden–cheeked warbler as well as many other native plant and wildlife species. The preserve also features three virtual caches that were published in 2001.
This trackable includes the original Wild Basin Hard Seltzer metal trackable, as well as a small laminated logo of Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve.
