I was last in Tallinn 22 years ago and it has changed a lot. Lots more tourists and noisy bars and karaoke now. It’s still lovely in the day. Had a walk around the old town and enjoyed the view from the top. I also visited the spot where the Danish flag was ‘born’. In 1291, the Danish king Valdemar Sejr (Valdemar the Victorious) led his army on a crusade to Estonia. During a battle, the Danes were on the defensive when suddenly a red banner with a white cross fell from the heavens. Luck changed, the Danish army won, and Denmark got its flag. 🛡️

Tere tulemast Eestisse! Welcome to Estonia. My tour guide wanted to know of any of us had anywhere we would like to see. One of the stops was in Viljandi, the Estonian town to be the centre of culture. It’s a very pretty place of lakes and hill and forests and castle ruins. So she was a bit surprised when I asked if we could go to a grim car park in town. Estonia’s only webcam! 🇪🇪

Time to leave Latvia. Rather than the direct bus, are on a little one way tour from Riga to Tallinn that takes all day and takes in visits to castles, bobsleigh courses, and old towns. We also stopped at Sietiņieža, a Devonian sandstone outcrop in the Gauja National Park, Latvia’s largest and oldest national park. 🏞️

Visited 8/19/2023 Wombatwandering took it to Riga From Above Latvia - 10.93 miles  Visit Log

Back in Riga and it’s party time here. Riga is 822 years old today and festival stages have been put up everywhere. This year’s theme is ‘Courage & Joy’ in case you were interested. Three events were on today, one of which was in the middle of a Latvian rock band concert so that was ….. different.

The Latvian Men’s football team have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, but did qualify for the European Championship in 2004. The Women’s team have never qualified for a major tournament. 🎉

The weather has been so warm that you deserved a day at the beach. Jūrmala is a Latvian resort city on the Gulf of Riga, just west of Riga. It’s known for wooden, art nouveau seaside villas, Soviet-era sanatoriums and long, sandy Jūrmala Beach. Very pleasant but then the skies got darker and thunder could be heard. By the time I got back to Riga, it was absolutely pouring and the streets were flooded. 🏖️

Spent the day getting lost amongst the streets in Riga’s Old Town. I feel it’s a bit like Disneyland for tourists and then there is real Latvia just outside. Still, the buildings are beautiful. I’ve attached a photo of The House of the Blackheads which is especially stunning. It’s actually a 1990 rebuild of the original building that was bombed by the Germans in the WWII and then demolished by the Soviets. The original was first built in the 14th century for the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreigners in Riga. ⛵️

Laipni lūgti Latvijā. Welcome to Latvia. You’ve arrived in Riga after a four hour bus ride. Had a bit of an explore around the Old Town. Super beautiful but very crowded with tourists. Even found the town ghost. 🇱🇻

Visited 8/16/2023 Wombatwandering took it to Vilnius Reverse Wherigo Lithuania - 1.47 miles  Visit Log

Time to move on from lovely Lithuania but first was an event on the other side of Vilnius. Heading to 33c today. Stopped to grab this cache on my way back. A bit of climbing in a deserted car park. Creepy. Then it was off to the bus station.

Fun fact : In the 14th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest country in Europe; present-day Lithuania, Belarus, most of Ukraine, and parts of Poland and Russia were all lands of the Grand Duchy. 🚌

Interesting fact for you……Lithuania has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, nor the UEFA European Championship.

I had planned to do another day trip the next day so I visited you into this cool cache on a steam engine train in Vilnius so you could get the miles. However, it was too warm and I was enjoying myself so much in Vilnius that I decided to just stay there. Why fix what’s not broken? Climbed up a church tower and watched the sun set over the city. 🌅

An excursion by train to Lithuania’s second largest city, Kaunas, for you today. It even served as the temporary capital of Lithuania in the period between the World Wars when Vilnius was seized and controlled by Poland. Great place. Really enjoying my time in this country.🍦
