About This Item

Meet Moby "The Mangler" Muskie, Ultimate Fish Fighting Champion (UFFC) of Northwestern Ontario. Moby has fought his way to the top in Northwestern Ontario taking out the toughest of Muskie and Northern Pike. The heavyweight Sturgeon will cross to the other side of the channel when Moby comes near. He has even challenged the mightiest of them all, Huskie the Muskie from Kenora, Ontario. Huskie was petrified and didn't move a muscle when the challenge was issued. Still today, he remains frozen in fear at the shoreline of the Kenora Harbourfront.

Born and raised in the Winnipeg River System, north of Kenora, Ontario, Moby started his junior years sparing with local Walleye welter weights. Even then, his parents knew this kid had something no fish could take from him.

Moby's career nearly ended a few summers ago when he was sucker punched by a noname angler. The angler obviously didn't realize who he was dealing with. Once Moby regained his balance, the angler was lucky to have escaped needed only a few hundred stitches. Moby was winded with only a few bruises and escaped virtually unscathed. The only permenant mark is the broken tusk that you will notice if you look closely. DON'T STARE TOO LONG! He's still sensative about the incident so if you stare too long, you might get more than you bargined for...

Please help Moby in his quest to seek out other fighting fish so that he can accomplish his dream of becoming the UFFC

We picked up this fighting fish so that he won't linger and perish in a cache that's seldom visited. A character of this type can perish of simple ennui if not allowed to get out occasionally.

According to a local fishermen with whom we are acquainted, the river along which this cache is located contains 41 species of fish, including trout, salmon and walleye, so ToyTruck chose well when he placed Moby here.

As we were walking back to our car, we followed the course of the river for a mile or so. This tricky little scamp managed to get out of his bag and lie in wait along the shore in a couple locations. We photographed him in situ before recapturing him and returning him to his baggy again.

When we got home, Moby escaped one more time and took on our big orange tiger cat. Neither one seemed willing to fight to the death, so it ended in a draw. Fortunately for Moby, the cat had already been fed today or the result could have been a tragic ending to Moby's days as a TB.

It might be a few days before we can get him into another cache, if it gets to be too long, we'll try to hand him off to another local cacher to get more activity. Either way, it will probably be more activity than he would normally get sitting in the final stage of a multi-stage cache. We'll post a couple of photos to provide visual confirmation of the stories above. 🙂

  • Along the Red Cedar River After visiting the cache and retrieving Moby, we saw this nice little vignette along the river bank, so we took a picture. What's that little, poorly focused object on the rock?
  • Along the Red Cedar River - Refocused Good grief, it's Moby the Mangler Muskie hanging out waiting for victims along the shore.
  • Along the Red Cedar River - Revisited Here's one more shot of Moby hanging out on the river bank. Notice how well he blends in and what a shady little location he found to lurk while waiting.
  • It's Moby again Here is Moby hanging out in another location along the river. He sure likes to linger in the shade!
  • Moby Vs. Marigold This fight ended as a draw. Fortunately, Marigold wasn't hungry or poor Moby might have met his match. She was just too big and fast for him to get a good grip on her.
  • A nice view on the MSU campus
  • A view of the Red Cedar River Moby was incarcerated in the Red Cache-Redone which lies along the banks of this river, roughly 1/2 mile from the location of this photo.
