Doing lots of business travel during Feb/Mar, but home for just one week, and had to take some time to do a little local caching with my sweetie.

How appropriate that I found this on the week of Mardi Gras 2011! I'm heading out next week on another business trip, and will put some miles on it before dropping it off.

We cached in the park where this bug was specifically so I could pick this one up, and it had actually was found by other cachers a few minutes ahead of me. As luck would have it, we bumped into them, and when they found out I was looking for this bug, they were more than happy to pass it over to me.

Mardi Gras has a special meaning for me, and has always been part of my life. I celebrate it even when I'm some place that doesn't celebrate it. I grew up near Mobile, Alabama (where Mardi Gras parading originated in the states), but my family is from New Orleans, and I spent a great deal of my youth going to parades there, too. I have not lived in Alabama for many years, but most years I trek there for the weekend before Mardi Gras day, as my family are musicians, and my brother's band always plays for the King and Queen (of Mardi Gras) Supper the Saturday before Mardi Gras day. I usually play with him also, so not only will these doubloons be back at some Mardi Gras parades, I will also take them with me to the King and Queen Supper and try to get a photo of them there. Those will be some lucky doubloons, even if they get to go in as part of the hired help! Laissez le bon temps roule!

  • At the parade This was taken during a triple-header parade in Mobile, Alabama on 2/13/10: The Floral parade, The Knights of Mobile, and the Order of Angels. I had better photos, but my phone camera is being persnickety about uploding them.
  • The King & Queen's Supper This is taken during the King & Queen's supper -- very prestigious! My phone, unfortunately, does not have flash, and it was dark with bright colored lights. This is part of the court having dinner, mostly the knights and their ladies. (I was in the band, not an attendee.) Taken 2/13/10.
  • A Knight and His Lady King & Queen of Mardi Gras Supper, 2/13/10. When we finished our (band) gig, I tried to locate the King and Queen to get a photo of the bug with them, but they had already left. Instead, I got one of the handsome (extremely drunk) young knights and his lady (not drunk) to pose with the bug. It's kind of hard to see -- again, no flash -- but it's the thought that counts. This bug is some place very few and select eyes get to go -- only the upper crust, usually. Now it's time for me to pass
