Harlequin frogs
Rod Atelopus (čeleď Bufonidae) zahrnuje několik desítek druhů žab žijících v tropické oblasti Střední a Jižní Ameriky, např. na území Bolívie, Kostariky nebo Francouzské Guyany. Žáby jsou aktivní ve dne, kdy loví hmyz, pavouky, stonožky a dokonce drobné bezobratlé živočichy. Většina z nich patří mezi ohrožené druhy. Žáby se vyznačují jasnými barvami a barevnými kombinacemi, což jim vysloužilo jméno "harlekýnové žáby". Pravděpodobně všechny žáby rodu Atelopus jsou jedovaté, ale dosud bylo toxikologickému výzkumu podrobeno jen několik druhů.
The genus Atelopus (family Bufonidae) includes several dozen species of frogs living in the tropical region of Central and South America, e.g. in Bolivia, Costa Rica or French Guiana. Frogs are active during the day, hunting insects, spiders, centipedes and even small invertebrates. Most of them belong to endangered species. The frogs are characterized by bright colors and color combinations, which earned them the name "harlequin frogs". Probably all frogs of the genus Atelopus are poisonous, but so far only a few species have been subjected to toxicological research.
