To travel around Australia collecting stories of goodwill along the way.
On my way home one afternoon, a minor traffic accident involving an elderly gentlemen occurred right in front of me. In an effort to avoid the taxi who had cut him off, his car hit the kerb and ended up with a flat tyre. I stopped to provide my details as a witness and to offer some assistance.
Anyway, after his car was driveable again we said our goodbyes. As I was about to continue my journey home he came back to me and said “I deal in opals and I’d give you some to say thank you for your help but I don’t have any with me. I also trade in small trinkets so I’d like you to have this souvenir comb instead.”
I was struck that he was courteous enough to say thanks and had even thought of giving me a possibly expensive gift. The plastic comb is not the point but the fact that someone took the time to say thanks. The good will between people carries society a long way.
This comb symbolises good will between people. Letting people into traffic or giving a friendly wave or smile doesn’t cost much but it does make a difference.
