Prince, pseudonimo di Prince Rogers Nelson (Minneapolis, 7 giugno 1958 – Chanhassen, 21 aprile 2016[3]), è stato un cantautore, polistrumentista e produttore discografico statunitense, popolare soprattutto negli anni ottanta e novanta.

La vena artistica musicale di Prince si sviluppò molto presto e lo portò a dedicarsi a composizione, arrangiamento, produzione, canto ed esecuzione dei suoi lavori spesso in totale autonomia. Il cantante è noto per la sua attività pionieristica sia in campo musicale sia commerciale, essendo stato fra i primi a sfruttare Internet per la promozione e la vendita online sul suo sito web[4].

Nel 2004 la rivista Rolling Stone lo ha inserito al 27º posto nella lista dei 100 migliori artisti, al 30º in quella dei 100 migliori cantanti di sempre e al 33º in quella dei 100 migliori chitarristi di sempre[5].

È noto al pubblico con numerosi nomi: oltre a Prince, negli anni l'artista ha utilizzato per motivi contrattuali o artistici varie formule come The Artist, sigle come TAFKAP (ovvero "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince"), o persino un simbolo impronunciabile, incrocio fra il simbolo del maschile e del femminile e noto ai fan come "Love Symbol"[6][7]. Molti anche i soprannomi, i più comuni dei quali sono "genio di Minneapolis" e "folletto di Minneapolis".
