About This Item

LUCKY NICK

The Jefferson nickel, designed by Felix Schlag in a Mint-sponsored contest, was minted beginning in 1938. The obverse features a profile of Thomas Jefferson, while the reverse features his Virginian estate, Monticello. Prior to introduction of the nickel, five-cent pieces were very small silver coins called half dimes. Nickels have always had a value of one cent per gram. The term "nickel" was originally applied to the Indian Head cent coin from 1859–1864 which was composed of copper-nickel. Throughout the Civil War the coins were referred to as "nickels" or "nicks".

Found in I SPY ACADEMY cache in Springfield IL.
THis is a hot spot for TB's and the first cache I found on private property. That was a little weird for me but I wanted to help a bug get closer to Chicago. I am placing this in my cache.... Were watching you.
