About This Item

I picked this up at an Event hosted by Marie Fostvelt on June 5, 2022.

https://coord.info/GC9QKZM CANCER SURVIVOR DAY

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday. Right now they are forecasting rain but that is why they invented umbrellas  The picnic area is covered but umbrellas will help deflect any liquid sunshine if you happen to be outside the table area!!!

When I first decided to host this event I was looking for a fun day to celebrate an event. I spotted this Cancer Survivor day and for me this was an important day to celebrate. I was informed by our reviewers that it is an agenda for me to tell anyone that they can survive cancer. They were not going to allow this event to go ahead and actually threatened me with sanctions should I persue the matter.

They stripped my cache page to nothing but most of the local geocachers are aware of my story. Just over ten years ago it was the geocaching community that came together to help me through a devastating diagnosis of stage 3b lung cancer. I was deemed to be terminal right from the start and this was not something I shared with very many people.

The purpose of this event was to thank all of those people that were – and still are – there for me and to thank them for helping to save my life. If it were not for these people and for geocaching in general in all likelihood I would not be here today.

Since then I have been diagnosed with cancer two more times – the most recent just a couple of months ago and my newest prognosis is not the best – but then again it is not the worst either. It can’t get any worse than a death sentence now can it and so far I have beaten that!! 

I know there are several TRUE cancer survivors within our geocaching organization and I salute them. Only those that have actually experienced a true cancer diagnosis can relate to any of this. I hope this event will show that there is support for all of those currently fighting and for those truly surviving. Life after cancer is more than just surviving. It is celebrating milestones, both major and the mundane. It is about thriving in spite of adversity. It is never giving up hope!!! It is getting back up when you are pushed down. It is about never giving up!

Stay safe and healthy!!!
