Current Goal

It's mission is to find its way back to the Albro Woods cache in Middletown, RI. Now listen up geocachers! Once you find this bug you can open the bag and take one of the diamonds for yourself! [One Per Person Please]. Thanks a lot and I hope you have fun!

About This Item

The bug is attached to a black velvet bag about 4 inches in length. Inside the bag is a collection of clear quartz crystals called Herkimer Diamonds.
They formed over thousands of years when water molecules, trapped in limestone, slowly crystalized into finely shaped diamonds. You can mine some of these yourself at a place called the Herkimer Mine in upper NY. It's off I90 on Rt. 28 heading north. It's easy to miss so keep those eyes peeled! Look for the big diamond hanging in the sky!

Woohoo! The Herkimer bug completed it's mission. With the help of all you awesome geocachers out there the bag of herkimers has made it back to Middletown after travelling almost 1000 miles! I've filled the bag with more diamonds and I am pondering what its next mission will be. I think I see another backpacking trip comming up!

Herkimer and I arrived at my office this week and some of his relatives showed up to meet him.

    • close relatives Almost as soon as Herkimer and I arrived at my office several of his close relatives thought they would try to catch up on old times. Herkimer diamonds are famous world wide because of their clarity and the fact that they are double terminated (pointy at both ends). To the left is Herkimer and to the right (lower and middle) are two of his brothers. In the upper right is a cousin from South America, they grow bigger there. Appropriately he his a dragon tatoo on his chest.
    • The rich relatives No sooner had Herkimer been visiting with his close relatives when other members of his family arrived. The Quartz family is a rather large and close group after all. There are members of almost every color. To the lower left is Auntie Amethyst and to the upper left and right are Uncle Citrine and Aunt Citrone. All three were dressed up in their Sunday best. They are the most famous of the Quartz family.
    • Group Hug After a nice visit with the entire Quartz family and it got late and time to say goodbye. I quickly snapped this touching group hug goodbye, until they meet again. Now Herkimer will be off on new adventures in Rhode Island in the next couple of weeks.

Well, I took Herkimer to my office this week to introduce him to some other gems, so I've up-loaded some family photos.

    • Close family relatives As soon as Herkimer and I arrived at my office several of his close relatives thought that it would be nice to catch up on old times. Herkimer diamonds are special because they are generally very clear and double terminated, meaning that they are pointy on both ends. Herkimer is to the left and his brother and sister are to the right (bottom and middle). His cousin (upper right) is from South America. As you can see they grow larger there. Appropriatly there is a dragon carved into this fin

Ran across this while Google searching RI caches and cachers. Amazingly it was just a short distance from my Moms house. Picked this with the help of Barefoot Joe and Adirondak Bet. Since we have a sailboat in Wickford RI, which we visit weekly, we will be dropping it off at the requested cache shortly. Our launch date is March 22+/- so we will be there about then.

Since Herkimer diamonds are quartz and I am goldsmith, I will bring him to my office and introduce him to some relatives. Stay tuned for photos!
