About This Item

Butterfly

The four travel bugs in the Audubon Food Chain were all released from the Audubon Center at the Francis Beidler Forest. The arrows depict the flow of energy in the simple food chain shown here: Butterfly => Frog => Snake => Hawk. Food chains exist everywhere on Earth and they intersect each other (fish also eat frogs, birds also eat frogs, frogs also eat frogs) to form complex food webs.

Hate snakes? Remove them from the environment and entire ecosystems will be affected. For example, higher rodent populations would consume greater plant matter (less food for other animals, including us) and increase the risk of disease transmission.

Habitat loss is currently the greatest threat to a multitude of species. In addition to moving this travel bug along, please investigate how you can help protect the food chains and food webs in your community!
