Travel together with "The Brussel's Manneken Pis On Tour" (TB1949E) to the "ORIGINAL STASH TRIBUTE PLAQUE" cache (GCGV0P). From there, head back home to Belgium, Europe, "Mathias 11jaar Kindercache" (GC12N4W) from cache to cache. *** NOTE: Unfortunately got seperated from it's companion. Moves along on his own... ***
The Brussel's Atomium was designed for the International Exhibition of Brussels in 1958, and was a symbol for the Belgian Metal Industries of the time. It was not meant to survive the Exhibition, but it's popularity and succes kept it alive. Since it's renovation from 2003 to 2006, it is - again - a major landmark in Brussels.
The Atomium represents an iron crystal, 165 billion times magnified, in the "body centered cubic system" configuration, with vertical body diagonal.
Each of the 9 spheres is 18m in diameter and holds 2 "event" floors. The connecting tubes are 3m wide and 18m or 23m in length. As the Atomium is positioned with a vertical body diagonal, it "rests" on one of the corner spheres. The resulting lower three of it's corner spheres are suported by large bipods (not seen in the TB's model). As a result of this, the three "upper" corner spheres are not open to visitors, as the weight of the structure plus visitors would be too large for the tubes holding the spheres together.
The Atomium's total height measures 102m. The top sphere holds a restaurant and 360° panorama floor.
It's coordinates are N50°53.696 E004°20.489 and it can be seen on Google Earth.
