Current Goal

I dream of visiting a sheep station in Australia. If I am lucky, perhaps I will meet the rest of my family from Sheepworld (www.sheepworld.de).

Temperatures have dropped but there is still a strong wind fanning the fires in parts of Victoria. I took you to Stony Point at the end of one of the Melbourne network train lines. It’s a little town on the Mornington Peninsula, the land that separates Port Phillip Bay from Western Port Bay. We walked along the coast to the larger town of Hastings. I intended to do some geocaching in the area but there started to be a strong smell of smoke in the air due to a nearby bushfire that had started. I was worried the train might need to be cancelled so decided to play it safe and head home. 🧑‍🚒

Another scorching hot day in Victoria and strong winds from the north meant we had a “catastrophic fire danger” warning. That fear was realised with several huge bushfires in the state that burnt large areas of land and many homes. Meanwhile in Melbourne, you went in a tour of the Melbourne Town Hall. We have a festival here called Moomba and I enjoyed seeing the photos of old Moomba Monarchs. The King used to be a celebrity and the Queen was the female winner of a beauty pageant. Luckily, times have changed. 🔥

We are taking advantage of a dip in the temperature to head to Geelong, Victoria’s second city and the home of my Australian Rules Football team, The Geelong Cats. During the 1850s Victorian gold rush, Geelong experienced a boom as the main port to the goldfields of central Victoria. The town then diversified into manufacturing, and during the 1860s became one of the largest manufacturing centres in Australia with its wool mills, ropeworks, and paper mills. 😺

Ohhhh, it’s a hot one today. Melbourne hit 42C. Luckily I didn’t have to travel far to get to the State Library of Victoria for this event. I used to come here to study when I was at school. The dome room used to be dark and lit only by green desk lamps. Now that the roof windows have been fixed, it’s beautiful and light. It is Australia's oldest public library and one of the first free libraries in the world. It is also Australia's busiest public library and, as of 2023, the third busiest library globally.

Amongst the library’s collection are items related to infamous Victorian bushranger Ned Kelly, notably his iconic armour and the original Jerilderie Letter, a 56-page document of approximately 8,000 words. In it, Kelly aims to justify his actions, including the murder of three policemen in October 1878 at Stringybark Creek. He describes cases of alleged police corruption and calls for justice for poor rural families. The myth surrounding Kelly pervades Australian culture, and he is one of Australia's most recognised national symbols. 📚
