About This Item

Smart - the racing car.

The original version of this tag belonged to Smart, the racing car.

The race was won by Woof! on 29th July 2007 after 10 days whilst Centi and Smart had not even left their starting caches. Woof! got too bored waiting, got a new tag and entered the SE Cachers' 2008 bug race in January 2008. Centi came second, arriving on 1st March 2008, 7 months later.

Smart travelled 3934.7 miles THE WRONG WAY on a 6.9 mile trek. He could have competed, against the odds, but his luck just got worse - he was sent to someone in the post and never arrived. So he lost the race and his short racing career was over.

Smart was the second of our trackable items to go missing, though one of the first we released.

This is the first COPY tag we have released to give the TB a new lease of life. The tag is very firmy attached to something that on close inspection is quite clearly bent out of shape and is the damage sustained during a caching misadventure by the owner that terminated caching there and then and resulted in a long unplanned walk. The reason is obvious when you see the TB, until then you'll have to guess.

The greatest misadventure suffered by the owner was when balancing on a fallen tree to cross a shallow stream. Not only did I lose my balance, but also, the stream was not shallow. Or rather, under a few inches of water, there was a huge depth of liquid mud and I sank up to my waist in it. As if to reinforce my misfortune, the stream was rust coloured and stained my top brown around my waist. I found the cache, squelched back to my car and drove home in my underwear, my stinking clothes and boots in the back,

So, when you log this TB, please tell us what your worst caching misadventure has been!

I've not being paying attention for a long time but it now appears that the original TB was not 'lost in the post' as I had been told but was actually out of circulation from 24/11/2007 to 26/06/2014, but then reappeared, which is quite remarkable.

In the mean time, the copy tag had been released and lost from the very first cache it had been placed in. I've now removed the logs relating to the grab and drop back in the UK relating to the copy tag. As no photographs of the lost copy ever appeared, the attached item was a section of buckled bicycle chain and the tag was fastened to it by passing one the the rivets from the chain through the hole in the tag first.

I will now endeavour to reinstate the listing for SMART was well as I can, perhaps I can retrieve the text from one of its long since missing racing buddies. My sons 'Sharky and Penguin' who were 7 and 8 years old have now grown up and left home, I've moved to the other end of England and our cache to which SMART was supposed to return was first adopted when I moved and later archived. I'd love to see the astonishment on the faces of my sons to be presented with their TB 15+ years later, so it would be fantastic if it could return to the UK and then come to Cumbria. I'm intending to start caching again after a long hiatus, so I expect I'll have a suitable cache ready to become its destination before it gets here.
