A quick drop and retrieve on the way back to Calgary from our trip to Saskatchewan. We'll head off to British Columbia tomorrow and drop this bug on Vancouver Island. Photos will follow - Promise!!

  • Southern Alberta near Ribstone cache Alberta, like Saskatchewan, is a farming and ranching province. Both provinces also have oil and you will see oil pumps dotting the landscape in many areas. This picture is taken from the site of a "ribstone", a native religious site and a cache. The rolling farmland that you see here gradually turns into foothills and then into the Rocky Mountains as you travel west past Calgary.
  • Creek near Calgary
  • Calgary, Alberta Calgary is one of the two largest cities in Alberta; the other is Edmonton which is the capital city of the province. The Calgary Tower (left of centre with the red top) was the inspiration for the design of the Olympic torch for the 1988 Winter Olympics which were held here.
  • Foothills near Calgary The foothills are large hills and ridges left by the glaciers as they retreated back into the Rocky Mtns at the end of the last ice age. The hills are gravel and rock and the land is great for ranching. There are lots of neat valleys and hideaways filled with small forests.
  • Wild Rose - Alberta's provincial flower
  • Hoodoos in the Badlands near Drumheller There are miles and miles of gulllies and canyons along the river that runs through the Badlands near Drumheller. In the summer, it's as hot as the desert. If you like dinosaurs, then this is the place for you to visit. The Royal Tyrrell Museum has some of the most amazing dinosaurs and exhibits in the world here. (www.tyrrellmuseum.com) You can even find dinosaur bones laying on the ground as you climb around these funny-looking "hoodoos".
  • Banff Nat'l Park - above Lake Louise When you come to visit, you will have to stop in Banff Nat'l Park. This photo was taken at a large mtn lake above Lake Louise. There is a teahouse up here that is open only during the summer. It is a long but easy hike and the view is tremendous. If you KooKooHeads are really energetic, you can walk all the way around this lake, climb up and over the Beehive (a section of the mtn out of sight on the left) and then down into a valley filled with glaciers!! Take lots of water and a picnic lunch!

  • SNC in the N.Saskatchewan River valley Although the land looks flat, it is quite deceptive. The southern part of Saskatchewan near Regina is like a billiard table but as you move north through the Battlefords (this picture) the land becomes filled with rolling hills and luch valleys filled with poplar and willow trees. Moving farther north past Prince Albert, the top half of Saskatchewan is full of spruce and pine forest and filled with thousands of lakes.
  • North Saskatchewan River The North and South Saskatchewan Rivers start in the mountains of Alberta and British Columbia and flow across Alberta, through Saskatchewan, northward to the Churchill River system and then on to Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba. These rivers were used for transportation of goods and materials first by the natives and explorers in canoes and then by steamboats as the western provinces were settled.
  • Saskatchewan Farm land Saskatchewan has been called "The Bread Basket of the World" due to its exports of wheat and other grains. It still produces a majority of the world's grain products.
  • Near Batoche Historic site
  • The historic Battle of Batoche site Batoche is the site of the final battle of the 1885 rebellion in what was then called Rupert's Land (now Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta). The Metis and Indians had many grievances against the government and these escalated into a rebellion. The church, rectory and graveyard are all that remain of the former town.
  • One ot the thousands of Sask. lakes SNC dabbles her toes in Jackfish Lake, north of N. Battleford, where her grandparents have a summer cabin. The lake is home to jackfish (also called northern pike), perch and other game fish.

Picked up today...a glorious sunny and breezy day while hiking on Signal Hill overlooking the city of St Johns with my 12yr old son the geocacher. It looks like this TB wants a geography lesson...so stay tuned for a little jump west. My son and I are visiting St Johns for a conference and we will tuck this TB in our luggage for a little ride. Great idea...using a TB for a geography lesson. regards, K o B.
