OK picture this. The year is 1757. Two intrepid souls set out from the settlements to explore the upper Dunbar Valley. They ride their horses as far as the terrain will permit. From here their journey on foot will begin and so will my story.
This area is still inhabited by people of the Delaware Indian Nation. One must be ever vigilant lest you give up your scalp too easily. We started out in the wee hours of the morning for it's safer to travel early. We traveled up Dunbar Creek hoping to find the treasure the old Master told us about. What it was we didn't know but he said it would be good for us to have it. We carefully walked upstream. Our ears were always listening for a sound that wasn't right or even worse, when there was no sound at all.
Fortunately the journey to Dunbar's confluence with Glade Run was uneventfull. We then began our search for the treasure we'd been searching for. It took a while but we finally found it. It was better than we had hoped for. We took what suited us and left the rest for the next brave souls. At this point speed was of the essence to get back to the settlements safely. We made it about halfway back to our horses when we heard a noise than sounded frighteningly like the war whoop of a Delaware warrior. We took to the rocks in an attempt to hide. Soon a small band of warriors passed us on the other side of the stream but fortunately for us they hadn't seen us nor did they seem to be looking for us. After a few minutes we started back downstream, this time at a much quicker pace. We reached the horses and made for the settlements as fast as we could. Was it worth it? Yes, the Master said it would be and it was. His quests always are.
The story you just read was not entirely made up. Highlander46 and I are French and Indian War reenactors. The trip to Iron Center was made in period correct clothing and accutrements. From our longshirts and deer skin leggings to the longrifles we carried. If you had seen us you would have though you'd seen ghosts of the past. The Dunbar Valley is a favorite place for we reenactors to trek to for the beautiful scenery and peacefull remoteness. So the nect time your in the area and a guy with long hair and a flintlock rifle steps out of the woods say hello. It's probably us.
