This is the 1st of our personal geocoins activated.
Our geocoin design, wording, and layout was our idea. We met with Chris and Helen at Landsharkz to discuss size, colours, number of coins etc. We were an early client for them. Chris tweaked the design, and he suggested that the cross-stitch bear would be actual little x’s that would be hand painted. The mint came back and said that the design would not work. Chris asked the mint to strike some prototypes and prove that the product would be bad. Once we saw them, it was obvious that it could be done so we proceeded.
We wanted our own icon, so we had to mint 500 coins because in 2005, Groundspeak required 500 coins to get their own icon. Once all the fees and costs were added up, the total was a little over $2,500 CAD. Landsharkz offered to sell 25 to 50% of them to make it cheaper. However, We wanted a Moun10Bike Geocoin.
To trade with Jon, your coin had to have its own icon and none of your coins could be sold, only traded or given away, so we had to foot the bill, so to speak. Also, Jon retains ownership of the coin. Should you try and sell it he will delete the coins page making it a nice trinket only.
There have been a lot of changes to how Groundspeak deals with personal geocoins over the past 20 years but we are happy with what we did and our timing to enter the geocoin world.
A few of the changes are: you no longer need 500 coins to get its own icon. When we received our coins, we also were given a spread sheet with all the coin numbers and all the individual activation codes. Now most of the activation codes are hosted by Oakcoins and you can have a single word to activate a coin.
Groundspeak Icon number: 524 (Actually the 391st 32x32 icon image issued)
Into our collection of course.
