The black nickel has shown signs of wear even though it has necer been released in the wild.  Just handling it caused the damage.  It is still wonderful

About This Item

AMTG Compass Rose 5th Anniversary Y G B B GC 1

A large coin with lots of heft. Thick in depth. The front has a floating compass and a compass rose design. The background metal texture is meshed. The enamel is matte to translucent. See below for the symbol translation. The rim has the tracking number and "Coinsandpins.com 2009". The reverse has a medallion of translucent green enamel. The design below is a ship wreck, sharks, a ships propeller, a treasure chest and coins. The inner rim is detailed 3-D work of sea serpents, a ships wheel and a rose. There is slight use of dark blue enamel in the rim. The outer rim is edged towards the medallion with waves, at the bottom, and clouds with lightning at the top. The outer rim has etched 3-D with white enamel. The script says "The Compass Rose Geocoin Fifth Year Anniversary". Available in a variety of enamel and metal colors. Excellent collectors coin.

Info on the coin:

Info on the coin:  2009 is the fifth year of the official Compass Rose Geocoin™. This coin celebrates the anniversary by incorporating design aspects of all five years into one coin. It also adds one more special feature of an actual working magnetic compass. This is the first geocoin to have a working compass. Each coin has been given a special theme for navigation achievements world wide. We also added a black nickel Compass Rose Geocoin™ representing the Black Sea. This is the first year we have designed a Compass Rose Geocoin that was not based on an actual compass rose used in navigation. Instead, the front side has a blend of designs for all five years of the previous Compass Rose Geocoins. Since this coin was introduced before the official 2009 Compass Rose Geocoin™, the fifth year design aspect is only slightly revealed. The backside shows the perils encountered when navigating the seas without good navigation tools such as the compass. From the belief of sea monsters and sirens, to storms and running aground or sinking, open water sailing was the most dangerous occupation of the time. Each point on the magnetic compass use the symbols of wind directions for the cardinal and ordinal directions. Below is a list of the names for each symbol: North Tramontane North East Gregale East Levanter South East Sirocco South Ostro South West Libeccio West Poniente North West Mistral.

Thanks to the 2023 Christmas Day blizzard my daughter, JMVonFange, was delayed in heading home so we spent the bonus time together comparing our caching statistics including trackables discovered and looking through our geocaching pictures. JM has discovered significantly more trackables that I have mainly because while we were staying home during the pandemic she spent time online and spotted numerous TBs that were being shared virtually on various social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc. Thankfully, she still had a few notes that helped guide my search for the same trackables that she had already discovered. After looking at the TB page for each of the TBs that she had discovered, I found that a large number all belonged to several individuals and sent a message to them individually inquiring about permission to log their trackables. This travel bug was on the list that you shared with me.
