Coconut ♀
Namesake: A coconut because of her hard head, color, ear spots, and she's a beach dog!
Nicknames: Rotisserie Chicken Butt (when she stretches her tiny legs out behind her, see photo), Dwarven Princess, PopCornDog (her "dog smell" is uniquely like popcorn or corndogs), Best Dog, Happiest of the Happy Dogs, LogDog (she likes to hike on fallen logs)
Birthdate: 24 Apr 2013 / 19 July 2014
Rescue: Wags and Whiskers Animal Rescue, Gulf Coast, USA
Travel: moved 3 times, lived in 2 states and 1 country
Breed: High probability of Pembroke Welsh Corgi due to her proportions, color, and markings, such as the signature Corgi "fairy saddle" and "mane." Possible Labrador Retriever. She's larger than a standard female Corgi, so she may be mixed with a larger breed like a Lab. She has lighter and much shorter fur than a Corgi, which also appears Lab-like. Her ears are half-floppy, so when held erect, they're large and bat-like just like a Corgi, but when folded down, makes her look like a Lab. We sometimes call her a Corgidor.
13 Oct 2016 Update: Based on a DNA test, Coconut has very mixed lineage with no purebreds within the last three generations, but she's likely part Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Labrador Retriever, and Australian Cattle Dog!
Traits: Medium-sized 25 lbs with dwarfed legs. Short-haired white with fawn on top of head and back. Half-floppy ears with fawn, plus dark fawn spots on right ear. Brown eyes and nose. Black lips with white whiskers. Longer fur "mane" around neck. Corgi "fariy saddle." Big chest. Tiny white crescent on her left flank. Pink belly with faint dark spots, not much fur, and a green tattoo line (indicates she was spayed in MS). Pink pads with black spots. Undocked tail longer than legs with longer fur. Medium-sized dog bark and growl. Fast and agile despite her short legs.
Likes: Food. Everyone, including all other species. Stuffed animals, antlers, and antler-like chews. Giving everyone lots of kisses, especially on the mouth. Playing with, cuddling, and being groomed by our cats and our ferrets. Neck scratches. Walks, hikes, climbing logs, zoomies in the backyard, and going to the dog park. Being happy all the time everywhere!
Dislikes: Loud noises. Vacuums. Getting her nails trimmed. Mean dogs. When Starbuck is mean (will run away).
Her Story: We never thought we'd find a dog that fit our free and spontaneous traveling lifestyle; dogs are so high-maintenance compared to other pets. But when we discovered "Madison" the Corgi-mix on AdoptAPet.com, she was a perfect match -- crazy cute as only a Corgi can be, sweet with every creature, super playful and affectionate, generally quiet, house-trained, crate-trained, not too big or small, etc. Her foster mom, who had 18 other dogs like "Madison" saved from high-kill shelters all over the Gulf Coast for Wags and Whiskers Animal Rescue, said she had her for a long time because potential adopters didn't want a dog with heartworms. We knew we had to get her after we researched treatment options -- there's no way we'd pass up such a wonderful dog just because she's sick! We brought her home, gave her the name "Coconut" for her new life with us, and got her heartworm, flea, and tapeworm treatments. She's now completely healthy, as sweet and energetic as ever, and loves all our other pets regardless of species!
