Special Olympics Inc. is een wereldwijde organisatie waarbij 170 landen zijn aangesloten. Special Olympics activiteiten vinden zowel lokaal, regionaal, nationaal als internationaal plaats. Wekelijks sporten wereldwijd ruim 2,5 miljoen mensen met een verstandelijke handicap onder begeleiding van vele duizenden vrijwilligers.
Special Olympics wedstrijden staan open voor alle mensen met een verstandelijke handicap die ouder zijn dan acht jaar en die minimaal zes maanden hebben getraind in de betreffende tak van sport. Special Olympics kent 30 officiële takken van sport, waarvoor Special Olympics sportreglementen zijn opgesteld.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, otter Special Olympics athletes and the community.
