Iron Horse Trail - Hyak to Cle Elum
Public
The Iron Horse trail (it's also known as the John Wayne Pioneer Trail) is a rails-to-trails conversion of the old Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific railbed. From the high point at Snoqualmie Pass it follows the western shore of Keechelus lake then generally south of I-90 to Easton and then on to Cle Elum. It's about 30 miles for this segment of the Iron Horse. The surface is hard packed gravel suitable for fat tire bicycles or hiking. The grade is basically flat losing only 600 feet of elevation for the entire trip. There are two short tunnels and a couple of trestles along the way to Easton. The last crossing the Yakima river and the active Stampeed Pass rail lines. The state parking area at Hyak is now free, the forest service lot requires a permit.
