Songs From The Wood
"Woody"
This is part of a series of caches on the beautiful Clatsop Loop and Tillamook
Head Trails.
Each cache has a different theme and they are created to blend into their forest
surroundings. They are also designed to be environmentally friendly, as
they are very unobtrusive and should not require trampling much vegetation to
locate. Although the disguises used could put them into the "tricky to
find" category, it is not my intention that they require a lot of time.
Use the hints which are designed to make the finds easy. Also, please let
me know if anything is unclear or you have any other problems with the caches.
The loop hike is about 3.5 miles. You can hike in either direction,
although I strongly recommend hiking up the western side and down the eastern
side (in which case, "Woody" will be your first cache).
The western side of the loop has some fabulous ocean views, but also some
dangerous dropoffs near the trail. Be sure to keep your dog on a leash.
There is also an extension to this series leading toward Seaside on the
Tillamook Head Trail. If you have energy left, give some of them a try!
See the cache list below for details. You can even hike all the way to
Seaside along this trail, although it is quite a hike!
The caches are:
Woody
Mossy 2
Fungi
Shroomy
A
Clean Sweep
Guardians of the North Coast (A short and worthwhile side trip)
For the extension from the top of the loop heading toward Seaside:
Rainy 2
Archie
Ferny
Gnomey
Army
Utey
Leapy
Phally
Owly
Growly
Returning down the east side of the loop:
Sierra Strider
Inoculated!
Arbor Harbor
Leafy
Where the Orange Ivy Grows
There is also a "field" puzzle cache which you can complete along the trail.
Please see
Ecola Orderia for details.
"Woody" is the first cache on the western side of the loop. If you plan to
start with this one, hike up the trailhead past the restrooms a short distance,
turn left and cross the bridge. All the caches are within a short distance
of the trail. Since this is a loop hike, there will be times when a cache
on the other side of the loop is closer than the next one along the trail.
Please find the caches in the order above (or reverse of that order).
There is no need to bushwhack off the trail to get to what might be a closer
cache. Thanks!
GPS reception is often limited under the heavy tree cover, so you will likely
find it difficult to narrow down the cache locations. When placing the
caches, I used two Garmin units and made multiple visits to refine the
coordinates as much as possible. Again, please use the hints which should
help overcome the reception difficulty.
