Geocache Description:

Songs from the Wood

Guardians of the North Coast

This is a new addition to a series of caches on the beautiful Clatsop Loop and Tillamook Head Trails.  For complete details and a list of the caches, please see Woody.

BE SURE to leash dogs and watch children carefully while hiking the west side of the loop.  There are numerous sharp drop-offs along the way.

A cache at the confluence of three remarkable historic events:

  1. In January of 1806, William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed very close to this site during a journey over Tillamook Head.  He was part of a small contingent traveling to the area of present-day Cannon Beach.  You can read an interesting account here.

  1. Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, which you can see (on a clear day) from the nearby viewpoint, was built in the 1880s and operational from 1881 to 1957.  Several fascinating books have been written about "Terrible Tilly", but you can read a nice, brief account here.

  1. Finally, some World War II history right at the site of this cache.  The old fortification here is the remains of a radar installation intended to detect invasion by sea.  You can read more details here.

Thus, the cache site you are visiting is not only filled with natural beauty, but with historical significance as well.  Enjoy your encounter with the Guardians of the North Coast.
