TOLLESHUNT MAJOR

Major is a corruption of the word ‘Mauger’ or ‘Malger’ a surname. The earliest records are from 1150 in the reign of King Stephen. Malger was the surname of a man who held the manor. An alternative name used in the early nineteenth century was Tolleshunt Beckingham. The name was derived from Sir Stephen Beckingham the owner of Beckingham Hall adjacent to the church (details in the church micro information). The village public house The Bell became known as the Beckingham Bell. There are no shops, street lights, mains gas supply or bus service in the village but it does have a pub!

Hill farm is no longer standing; it had stood on the site that is now Beckingham Business Park. Little is known about the property other than it did not have a staircase – just an ordinary ladder to access the top floor. It was known for growing strawberries and also had cattle with a large dairy section. When Jack Cohen (founder of Tesco) was looking for farms he bought Hill Farm, amongst others locally. He decided to can the strawberries by converting some of the dairy equipment and from this the business grew. At one point they were canning 100,000 cans an hour and employed 300-400 staff who were brought in from the surrounding parishes by buses. The business was sold a couple of times before being developed into the Business Park. Hill farmhouse stood where the reception is now.
