For those that don’t have one, there is a boat hire place in Woronora. I recommend calling them before heading out to check on availability.
For your effort you will be rewarded with not one, but FIVE caches that are part of the Woronora River series. The other four are:
- Breakdown and Makeup (contains the co-ords for the Deepwater and Shackles Estate caches)
- Deepwater Estate (contains half the co-ords for Breakdown and Makeup)
- Salinity Now!
- Ruined Castles
So what are you waiting for? Get out on the water!
If you REALLY want to walk, the co-ordinates for this one and “Deepwater Estate” are in “Breakdown and Makeup”. I can assure you that it’s far easier by boat.
Shackels Estate was subdivided in 1916 as camping blocks. Two brothers, Polish Jews, the Shackels who migrated from the US purchased many of the blocks and rented them out. During the Depression as unemployment soared, many people couldn't afford the rent and left or were evicted. However a number of people moved in as permanent residents and built shacks. In later years government bodies ordered that they be removed.
The cache is located in what’s left of one of the shacks and you can also see remnants of a lot of other building work along the river like:
• Jetties
• Steps up the hill
• Roads
• Reticulated water
• Electricity
Now to the cache.
Go to the above co-ordinates.
Find the following numbers on the sign and insert them in the cache co-ordinates below:
ABC Volts
D.E Metres Clearance
The cache is located at:
340 0B.89A
1510 0B.0C9
HALF OF THE CO-ORDS FOR “BREAKDOWN AND MAKEUP” ARE TAPED TO THE LID.
BE SURE TO MAKE A NOTE OR PUT IT INTO YOUR GPS.
