This is the second cache in a series dedicated to our Solar System.
Each cache page will have information about the planet it
represents. The series is sponsored by the Carolina Caching Club.
Venus
Planet Venus is the second closest planet to the Sun, and the
sixth largest overall and the hottest planet in the solar system.
The brightest of all planets, Venus, is also known as the Morning
Star and the Evening Star. Venus is called Earth's "sister planet"
because of the similarity in mass, size, volume and density but it
is covered with impenetrable clouds of carbon dioxide and sulfur
compounds. Venus spins slowly retrograde (backwards west to east)
in 243 days and takes about 225 days to orbit the sun. This makes a
day on Venus about 115 Earth days and can raise surface
temperatures up to 900°F. This heated temperature is due to a
runaway greenhouse effect caused by the heavyly carbon dioxide
filled atmosphere. Venus also shows proof of volcanic activity on
its surface terrain.
Venus (Greek: Aphrodite) is the goddess of love and beauty. The
planet is so named probably because it is the brightest of the
planets known to the ancients. (With a few exceptions, the surface
features on Venus are named for female figures.) Venus has been
known since prehistoric times. It is the brightest object in the
sky except for the Sun and the Moon. Like Mercury, it was popularly
thought to be two separate bodies: Eosphorus as the morning star
and Hesperus as the evening star. The first spacecraft to visit
Venus was Mariner 2 in 1962. It was subsequently visited by many
others (more than 20 in all so far), including Pioneer Venus and
the Soviet Venera 7 the first spacecraft to land on another planet,
and Venera 9 which returned the first photographs of the
surface.
