Geocache Description:

The cache container is a round tupperware, about 4 inches in diameter and 5 inches high. This cache has been placed with permission, but you do not need to enter anyone's private drive or yard.

01/25/08 Update: The cache was recently tampered with by muggles. Everything was left scattered on the ground at GZ, and two travel bugs are missing. (It's possible they're still somewhere on the ground near GZ; if you see an airplane keychain or geocoin, pick it up ) Use your own judgment about leaving TBs in this cache. And please rehide it better than you find it; I'm a fan of palm fronds.

This cache is part of a series of caches highlighting places that have excellent Christmas light displays.

Christmas Tree Lane (actually Santa Rosa Avenue, between Woodbury Avenue and Altadena Drive) is recognized as the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Nearly 135 Deodar Cedar trees have been decorated annually since 1920 in what's known as the “Mile of Christmas Trees” (containing 10,000 lights.)

The Lane is generally lit at a "Lighting Ceremony" on the second Saturday of December. The lights will go on at dark and will turn off around midnight. The lighting will continue until New Year's Day.

The Lanes lights are put up every year by volunteers who start working in mid-October on weekends and most years finish just in time for the lighting. The volunteers are made up of locals, members of the Christmas Tree Lane Association, and service organizations, although anyone is welcome to join. All the light bubs are put onto lines and then put on the trees by hand with the help of pulleys and ladders.

For more information, visit the Christmas Tree Lane Association website.

To get to Christmas Tree Lane from downtown Pasadena, drive north on Lake Avenue, turn left on Woodbury and right on Santa Rosa to Altadena Drive.

In order to be able to access the cache year-round, the cache is not located on the actual Lane. You'll have to be stealthy to get to and from GZ, but you should be able to search for the cache without being observed. You DO NOT need to enter a private drive. You DO NOT need to enter anyone's nicely mowed lawn to retrieve this cache. If you have any doubts about what area to start looking, please check the first hint. Oh, and watch out for thorns. Placed with permission.
