Geocache Description:

The Dark Side of the Pitt - An Cache Expedition

NOTE: We'll be monitoring FRS channel 2 (and 12 as an alternate).

This is a two night event cache that will take place on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of July, 2004. We will be departing from Grant Narrows at 9:00 AM sharp on Friday -- be sure to arrive early to pack your gear. To log this cache event, you must make the trip to Osprey Creek North Campsite. Power boats are welcome to participate in this event. This event is open to all cachers who wish to attend.

Click for a larger map IMPORTANT: As with other large lakes, Pitt Lake is subject to strong winds and waves which can make paddling dangerous. It is highly recommended that you bring extra food and clothing in the event that travel is inhibited due to incliment weather.

Pitt Lake is the second largest lake in the region, even longer and wider than Indian Arm. It is the largest tidal lake in North America -- ocean tides push up the Fraser River and then up the Pitt River to Pitt Lake causing the water level to rise and fall with the changing tides.

There are many beaches and coves to explore on Pitt Lake. In fact, it would be easy to spend several days paddling from one location to another. This cache event will give you a good sampling of some of the beautiful spots to explore.

Our trip will begin at Grant Narrows Regional Park (Parking is $5/per night).

July 9th -- Leave Grant Narrows at 9:00AM and stop to pick up the first six caches along the east shoreline. Set up camp at Osprey Creek North campsite - find the 2-3 caches near the campsite at your leisure over the next couple of days. Distance to paddle is about 17 kms.

July 10th -- go for a paddle up the lake to Vickers Creek (about 18 km return), OR go for a paddle to the top of the lake (about 24 km), OR go for a short paddle trip for a couple of hours, OR just hang around the camp for the day. Weather will be a big factor here and everyone might decide to do different things.

July 11th -- paddle across the lake to Cozen point and leisurely travel the west side of the lake picking up two more caches. After visiting the cache at Dark Creek we'll cross the lake back to the east side to return home. Distance to paddle is about 18-19 kms.

Osprey Creek North is a primitive campground that has a few tent pads and pit toilets -- there are no other services.

Please note that you are responsible for all of your own food and equipment including, tent, sleeping bag, kayak, and all other related gear.
