First Street
Bridge
Built in 1929, this reinforced concrete
arch/T-beam bridge exhibits character-defining features of
Beaux-Arts bridge design. Located on First Street as it crosses the
Los Angeles River between Boyle Heights and Downtown Los Angeles,
the subject structure rests on six pairs of vertical piers in an
open spandrel arch form and in a T-beam form on several smaller
vertical piers. The deck of the bridge exhibits a sculpted concrete
railing with incised rounded arches. Five pairs of square piers
support a Classical-style keystone arch with inset panels above,
ascending to a simple stepped cap. Eleven pairs of electroliers are
designed as Doric-style columns topped by another rounded column.
Contemporary cobra-type light fixtures are attached to these
electroliers.
The total length is 1327.2 feet, with the
largest span at 148.0 feet.
