Hi, Mile Cyclist! Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

lesdubois: The cache is gone, and the large stump in which it was hidden is hollowed out and laying on its side. (See photo.) The nearby bench is surrounded by beer cans, cigarette butts, and debris I associate with homeless camps.

One of the clues is missing, along with the post it was nailed to.

This cache was a tribute to Himilecyclist. It is fitting that this archive log, my first ever, be a tribute to Seawind, who taught me that the world moves on.

Geocache Description:

This is the description of a puzzle cache. The cache is not at the posted coordinates. You'll need to solve the puzzle below to learn the actual coordinates.

As you may have guessed, this is a tribute cache for himilecyclist.

Himilecyclist places high quality caches. He specializes in photo (Harvard/Yale Photo Mystery 1) and musical (Musical Trinity 1) puzzles, but he has a variety of other traditional (Behemoth), multi (Beacon Ridge Ascent), and puzzle (City of Books) caches to boot. He has placed some clever hides (Westminster), and he has hidden caches in surprising locations (Bill's Arch). He has caches on mountains where hikers rarely tread (Citadel One) and on ocean side cliffs that are accessible only at low tide (Maritime Adventure). His hiking series (Wasatch Workout and MMOG-10) are legendary.

Himilecyclist will hike or bike all day to find a single cache. He rewards a good hide with an entertaining log entry. He is the embodiment of the phrase "it's not about the numbers." After five and a half years of steady caching, he is just now closing in on 800 finds.

Appropriately enough, this puzzle will be easiest to solve from the seat of a bicycle. The posted coordinates will take you to a spot on the Jordan River Parkway at the Cottonwood Grove trailhead in Murray. (Parking is available here.) To find the cache, you will need to travel north along the parkway for no more than six miles. The route meanders along the Jordan River, is almost completely level, and except for the intersection immediately north of the trailhead has no road crossings.

The first step is to locate the sign that is pictured above. You will find it within the first 100 yards of your trip up the Parkway. On the sign is a one-inch piece of reflective aluminum (shaped like a parallelogram) displaying a single character (either a digit or a capital letter). Find it and note the character. This is the first clue. You will be finding three other clues as you ride north; each is an identically-sized piece of reflective aluminum.

Using the procedure described in the next two paragraphs, you will use the first clue to locate the second clue, the second clue to locate the third clue, the third clue to locate the fourth clue, and the fourth clue to locate the cache container.

When you find a clue, locate its row in the table above. In the second column you will find the distance (in miles) that you must travel to find the next clue (or the cache). This distance is not measured as the crow flies; it is measured along the Parkway. You will need to use your bike's odometer, your GPSr's trip odometer, or something similar to measure the distance.

When you have traveled the specified distance, you will find the clue (or cache) a few feet to the right of the Parkway. Since it is difficult to measure exact distances, there is a way for you to check your measurements. When you have reached the correct location on the Parkway, the north coordinate displayed by your GPSr will end with the two digits from the third column (assuming your GSPr is displaying that coordinate in the form N DD° MM.MMM). As long as your odometer gets you within a few hundred feet of the correct location, you can use this information to fine-tune your position.

The cache container is (what else?) a waterproof match container. Have fun, log your find, and then go out and find some of himilecyclist's caches!
