TREKKING TRAVERSE
TRAILS
This cache is placed in what is now known as the Grand Traverse
Commons. Built in 1885, it was first known as the Northern Michigan
Asylum. The hospital’s original theme was "beauty is
therapy." The hospitals first superintendent, Dr. James Decker
Munson, felt that if people were surrounded by beauty and
tranquility, a lot of their mental problems would cease to exist.
When we were growing up it was called "The Asylum" or "The State
Hospital" by the adults, to the smart mouthed kids it was "The 11th
Street College".
The institution was closed in 1989 and the buildings and grounds
began to decay. Ownership was passed by the State to the County,
the City of Traverse City, and Garfield Township. After some false
starts, reconstruction and maintenance of the buildings and 450
acres of grounds was given to the Minervini Group. Now called "The
Village" it is definitely a work in progress. At the time this
cache was placed, it is home to more than 60 businesses and
numerous condo housing units.
We picked The Cedar Cathedral Trail for this cache because of
the name. It is the trail with the green markers.
It is not necessary to
jump through the sticker/pamphlet hoops to log this
cache.
We got the idea for our Trekking Traverse Trails series from a
similar series in Florida. As a reward for the first 50 who wish
one and who complete the series, we have created a Path Tag on
which is the Traverse City logo. To acquire a tag, stop at the
Traverse City Visitors Center(
GC17HZ4), and pick up a free Trekking Traverse Trails
brochure.
In each cache container you will find a sticker for that cache.
Paste each of the ten stickers in the brochure, mail it in, and we
will sent you your tag.
