Geocache Description:

This cache is in a lockable, clear plastic container. It isn't too hard to find, but you will need to poke around a bit. Due to the trees, the co-ords are accurate within 30m, so a fairly strong clue has been given. You will also not need to stray from the local path heading up the bank.

If you look south east from the center of Huddersfield, Oaken Bank Plantation is the big patch of green you can see. It borders Squirrel Ditch and provides a rare urban wood, very close to the center of town.

It also forms part of the grounds of Longley old Hall, one of the old manor houses from the area which is still intact and being lived in.

Sadly though, this wood has been within reaching distance of a few council estates for many years. Even though the area is quickly regenerating, the wood still bears the scars of years of dumped rubbish. If you'd like to bring a bag and take some out with you, the Squirrels and Badgers will love you for it. We would also strongly suggest that this cache is not done at night time; the best time would be early in the morning.

Parking can be found at the bottom of Dog Kennel Bank, as described in the Squirrel Ditch Cache.

This is second of the the three Lower Houses Circular caches - a series caches which are easy to walk between and will show you three urban woods in Huddersfield. These caches were originally places for children and their parents, and were filled with things for kids; you are welcome to keep up the tradition. The next cache is Penny Spring Wood (LHC 3/3). The starting cache ( Squirrel Ditch) has a way point for a bridge on the roman road that borders the two woods - this path heads back to the parking!
