This is one of a series of "Dam Fine" caches. Each is loosely, or
sometimes very tenuously, linked to a dam theme. Other caches in
the series include:
There is very limited parking at a few places on Aurs Road
(<8 cars). A waypoint for the biggest space is below. The area
is popular amongst anglers and walkers so you might want to get
there early (or late). It is also possible to approach the cache
from Darnley and up through Waulkmill Glen. The robinsonfamily5 and
Pooter have suggested parking waypoints for the approach from
Darnley.
We have always known this area as The Barrhead Dams, or just
"The Dams", but we are sure there are many other names for them.
The four (we thought it was only three) areas of water are Balgray
Reservoir (the biggest), Ryat Linn Reservoir, Littleton Reservoir
and Waulkmill Glen Reservoir.
Balgray Reservoir is the largest and was constructed between
1860-1865 by the Gorbals Gravitation Water Company. The reservoir
system, served by the Brock Burn and other small streams that
ultimately flow into the White Cart Water, was the first ever
gravitational scheme in Britain. The reservoirs of Waulkmill Glen
and Ryat Linn were built before Balgray. Ryat Linn lies just below
Balgray Reservoir on the other side of Aurs Road and water runs
down from Balgray into it:
The reservoirs are owned by Scottish Water but the walkways,
where the cache is, form part of the 'Dams to Darnley Mill'
project. East Renfrewshire and Glasgow City Councils are in the
process of developing a country park in this area with a view to
opening up the area for public access and recreation. Some new
paths were created in 2008. If they are going ahead with these
plans, they surely need to improve the parking................
