The Case of the GC Killer Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

TripCyclone: The premise was good, but this one just didn't have as many takers. For anyone wondering, the killer was StealthRT. This was one I was planning on archiving anyway, and when I heard another cacher was waiting to place a cache nearby but couldn't due to the final, I was happy to archive. This one will be cleaned up.

I happened to check a few weeks ago and some of the additional suspect containers were already gone. Makes for easier cleanup. This could be a fun puzzle idea for someone to try again someday, and maybe improve on.

Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates are bogus. They will not lead you to the cache. To figure out the final location, you need to solve the accompanying mystery.

Over the course of 2009, five murders occurred in the Raymore area. Seemingly unrelated at first, the knowledge of a new recruit opened up the doors on the case, showing that all of the five murders were geocaching related. Each murder happened near an established geocache (in order of publication: GCR122, GC1H0KM, GC1NFQY, GC1Q408, & GC1YRRJ). However, due to the devious nature of the killer, who has been dubbed the GC Killer, evidence collected at the crime scenes implicates a different person for each murder. Collect the clues and find out who is suspected of each murder, the geocache the murder happened near, the murder weapon used (including a hiking pole, a Delorme PN-40 GPSr, a Maglite flashlight, an ammo can, and climbing rope), and the date of each murder.

To help solve these murders, I am appointing you Temporary Deputy status. Clues have been discovered in the accompanying list of caches. However, the killer, in an attempt to deceive you, has been removing some of the clues. Thankfully, an honor bound citizen had carefully recorded all of the clues before they were hijacked. They have provided them for you to peruse. You can chose to visit the caches and collect what clues remain on your own, or access the list of clues. Get all of the clues and you can begin to solve this mystery for us. To aid with this struggle, I've provided you with a system of tracking and working through the clues. You will want to print off a copy of the attached puzzle grid. The puzzle grid is set up for easy tracking.

As you hunt for clues, you will find two types of clues: clues that prove two facts DON'T match up, and clues that prove two facts DO match up. When two clues, such as the Suspect and Weapon, don't match up, cross out the intersecting box (or completely fill it in). When two clues do match up, either leave it alone or put a circle inside the box. Once you have worked through all the clues properly, each 5x5 section of the grid will have only five circles, and each circle will be in it's own row and column within that section of the grid. With all the circles in place, you'll have a list of which suspect is believed to have caused each murder, when the murder happened, where it happened, and which weapon was used.

One problem. As mentioned, there are five very viable suspects committing the five murders. Only one of the suspects is the true GC Killer. Once you have all the correct circles, the underlying numbers can be highlighted. The top three sections of the grid will provide the decimal portion of the North coordinates. The middle two and the bottom section will provide the decimal portion of the West coordinates (in that order). Before each set of numbers, you'll find the Minutes value for either the North or West coordinates.

After you have a set of North and West coordinates for each suspect, you will then need to determine which of the suspects is the real GC Killer. To do that, you'll have to figure out which coordinates lead to an alibi and which one leads to the killer. Figure out which coordinates lead to the killer and sign the log to claim your find.

The clues found within the caches are being replaced with updated clues. The main change is switching the "Suspect X" with the name of the actual suspects from the event this series was released for. To aid the transition, I'll leave up the original grid until all clues are replaced and provide the suspect list:

  • Suspect 1 - Cyndicow
  • Suspect 2 - Carlin of Byonke
  • Suspect 3 - Atomic Falcon
  • Suspect 4 - StealthRT
  • Suspect 5 - Stink Bug Crew
